Customs and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

Following the adoption of Resolution 70/1. Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by the United Nations General Assembly on 25 September 2015, the WCO and its Members have been considering the role and contribution of Customs in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out in the 2030 Agenda.

As reflected in the WCO’s Customs in the 21st Century strategy document, leaders from national Customs administrations acknowledge the part they play in meeting the challenge of ensuring that globalization becomes a positive force for all people across the world. With the aim of promoting socio-economic development, creating conditions for economic growth and providing security for citizens, key Customs areas have been identified as strategic priorities to guide the WCO’s work.

The chart below illustrates how Customs commitments and activities, both in general and under specific strategic pillars, contribute to the attainment of each of these 17 SDGs.
