On 2 July 2013, Sao Tome and Principe deposited with the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization its instrument of accession to the International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (Harmonized System).

Considering that more than 98 % of international merchandise trade is classified in terms of the Harmonized System, the World Customs Organization is pleased to welcome Sao Tome and Principe as the 148th Contracting Party to the Harmonized System Convention and looks forward to its active participation with respect to Harmonized System matters.

Sao Tome and Principe has been a Member of the World Customs Organization since 23 September 2009. Sao Tome and Principe is a country in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa. Its principal export commodities are cocoa, copra, coffee and palm oil. The country’s principal import commodities are machinery and electrical equipment, food products and petroleum products.
