The WCO held a Leadership and Management Development (LMD) Workshop in Ezulwini, Swaziland from October 14 to 25, 2013 for senior managers of the Swaziland Revenue Authority (SRA). The event was held in the context of the WCO Project "Customs Capacity Enhancement for Sub Saharan Africa" funded by the World Bank.
Since its creation, the SRA has implemented a number of important international best practices and standards in the area of Customs modernization and has achieved significant progress in its reform and modernization efforts. Management Development is a high priority and a continuous process for the SRA, supported by the WCO.
The LMD workshop brought together 24 directors from SRA’s Customs, Domestic Taxes and Corporate divisions. Throughout the LMD workshop many of the current and future challenges of the SRA were discussed. The LMD workshop also contributed to stronger teamwork at the director’s level of SRA. On a more individual level, the Directors did not only learn different skills to better manage their managers and supervisors, but also became more self-aware of who they personally are as leaders.
At the end of the workshop each participant evaluated his or her learning process and presented changes he/she is going to make in his/her leadership and management practice. These personal development objectives and the further development of leadership and management within SRA, will be the object of further work in the coming months.
