The President of the Republic of Benin, Dr. Boni Yayi, has bestowed the title of "Commander of the National Order of Benin" on Mr. Kunio Mikuriya, Secretary General of the WCO. The award ceremony took place on 13 September 2013 during the session of the African Union Sub-Committee of Directors General of Customs, held in Cotonou, Benin.
In his congratulatory address, Benin’s Minister of Culture, Literacy and Craft, Mr. Babalola Jean-Michel Hervé Abimbola, speaking in his capacity as interim Minister of Economy and Finance, acknowledged Secretary General Mikuriya's leadership in successfully steering the Secretariat as well as his personal contribution to the development of the economy of Benin and that of Africa.
In his acceptance speech, Secretary General Mikuriya expressed his gratitude for the recognition of his work by Dr. Boni Yayi, nevertheless pointing out that this award should also be shared by the WCO and Customs officers as a whole. He added that he would continue his efforts to work with the Customs Administrations of Benin and Africa for a better world. The Directors General of Customs of Africa and the African Union Commissioner congratulated him on this prestigious award conferred by the President of Benin.
Dr. Boni Yayi commented that the day before he had thanked Secretary General Mikuriya, on behalf of all the Heads of State of Africa, for his personal contribution to Africa, stressing that it was always a pleasure to meet with him.
