WCO and UNIDO sign Joint Declaration to support implementation of the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement

On 14 June 2016, the Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Mr. LI Yong, visited WCO Headquarters for discussions with WCO Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya on topics of mutual interest with a view to enhancing cooperation between the two Organizations.

Mr. LI was accompanied by a high-level delegation from UNIDO. A wide range of subjects were discussed, including trade facilitation, the importance of the work of laboratories in testing products to ensure compliance with internationally-recognized standards, and the opportunities and challenges raised by the creation of economic zones within countries.

The Heads of the two Organizations agreed on the importance of strengthening the working relations between the WCO and UNIDO and, to give concrete form to this cooperation, they signed a Joint Declaration regarding effective implementation of the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA).

With the signing of this Declaration, the two Organizations agreed to cooperate on the design and implementation of capacity building projects related to enhancing the clearance process and facilitating trade, including the use of simplified and harmonized procedures, risk management and modern working methods, as well as other measures supporting the implementation of the TFA.

UNIDO, a specialized agency of the United Nations, has the primary responsibility to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable development in developing countries and economies in transition.

The WCO provides leadership, guidance and support to Customs administrations to secure and facilitate legitimate trade, realize revenues and protect society.
