Recognizing the importance of the entry into force of the new version of the Harmonized System (HS) Nomenclature, the WCO successfully led a five-day seminar on implementing the amendments in the 2017 version of the Harmonized System (HS 2017) and on the harmonized Technical Guidelines on Advance Rulings for Classification, Origin and Valuation. This seminar was held at the Amman Regional Training Centre (RTC) in Jordan, from 11 to 15 December 2016.

New record seizures of illicit medicines in Africa

The World Customs Organization (WCO) and the International Institute for Research Against Counterfeit Medicines (IRACM) today announced the results of their fourth common initiative in the fight against fake medicines on the African continent. This is a new record seizure of 113 million* illicit and potentially dangerous pharmaceutical products, which took place in the context of Operation ACIM (Action against Counterfeit and Illicit Medicines) in September 2016. The number of seizures made in joint IRACM-WCO operations has now reached dramatic proportions, with almost 900 million counterfeit and illicit medicines seized at the borders of the continent.

The new version of the Harmonized System (HS) Nomenclature entered into force on 1 January 2017. Developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and adopted in 1983, this is the Sixth Edition of this global standard, used by over 200 countries and Economic or Customs Unions (including the 154 Contracting Parties to the HS Convention) for classifying goods in international trade.
