In partnership with the Container Control Programme (CCP) run jointly by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the WCO COPES Programme1 organized a training course which was delivered online to Algeria Customs from 16 to 20 May 2021.
The training course brought together 23 officials from Algerian Customs’ Port Control Units (PCUs) and Air Cargo Control Units (ACCUs).
As part of the fight against illicit goods transported in sea or air containers, the CCP is setting up PCUs and ACCUs in the key seaports and airports of recipient countries. Staff working in these units are therefore benefiting from training courses provided to build their capacity in terms of targeting and risk management as well as in terms of establishing Customs infringements and gathering evidence. In this way, staff will be able to expedite effective controls while minimizing disruption to the flow of legitimate trade.
The course was organized with the above objectives in mind. After the COPES Programme and its team had been presented and the course participants introduced, the agenda for the week was structured around the full spectrum of Customs enforcement activities from establishing an offence, via the methods for gathering evidence and conducting seizures, right up to securing a conviction.
