WCO holds in-person Workshop on Combating Counterfeiting and Piracy for Iran Customs

26 abril 2022

From 21 to 23 February 2022, in collaboration with right holders’ representatives, the World Customs Organization (WCO) held a three-day Workshop for the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) on Combating Counterfeiting and Piracy. The Workshop received financial support from Japan Customs.

The Workshop was aimed at improving Customs officers’ knowledge of border enforcement in the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) domain, including laws, regulations and risk management. Over 60 Customs officials participated in the event.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Khaki from IRICA’s International Cooperation Division expressed his appreciation to the WCO, the donor and private sector representatives for making this Workshop possible and, in so doing, enhancing IRICA’s border enforcement capacities.

The participants learned about new WCO materials such as the IPR Self-Assessment Tool. They considered the various tools to be very useful for detecting and addressing any potential weaknesses in the national Customs enforcement approach and ensuring effective and efficient IPR border enforcement.

In addition, some intellectual property right holders gave a presentation on the latest trends in counterfeit items infringing their products in the region. The participants were highly proactive in exchanging views on IPR border enforcement with the right holders taking part.

The Workshop participants were asked to identify gaps between IRICA’s enforcement system and WCO Members’ good practices on IPR border enforcement, if any, using the new WCO tools and other materials. The findings of this exercise could form the basis for future capacity building activities by the WCO.
